EU COMMISSION - Marie Curie Host Fellowships

for Early Stage Research Training (EST)

EIMID-EST PhD Programme

Ten three-year fellowships are offered for students to enter a top level European PhD programme organised by the European Initiative in Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (EIMID).

Students will be hosted by the five EIMID participants: the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology in Berlin ( Germany), the Centre for Molecular Microbiology and Infectionat Imperial College in London (UK), the Institut Pasteur in Paris ( France), the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm ( Sweden), and Chiron in Siena ( Italy).

Training Programme

Each student will follow an individual PhD programme in one of the following areas:

1. Post-exposure vaccination against tuberculosis (Max Planck);

2. Resolution of vesicular trafficking pathways critical for the replication of intracellular pathogens (Max Planck);

3. Investigation of the cellular function of CCCH proteins ( Imperial College);

4. Analysis of the fine structure/function relationships in TTSS from human pathogens ( Imperial College);

5. Analysis of host-sporozoite interactions in malaria infection (Pasteur) ;

6. Use of cyclotides to design inhibitors for protein-protein interaction surfaces (Pasteur) ;

7. Molecular mechanisms of host susceptibility to invasive pneumococcal disease (Karolinska);

8. Molecular mechanisms of Helicobacter pylori cell surface diversity to avoid immune recognition (Karolinska);

9. Bioinformatic tools to obtain novel vaccine candidates from bacterial genomes (Chiron);

10. Structure/function relationships of bacterial surface molecules (Chiron).

Stages in other institutes of EIMID will be integral part of the programme. During the project, students will have the chance of being trained in different disciplines and techniques ( microbiology, infectious diseases, immunology, structural biochemistry, chemistry, developmental biology, neuroscience, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, photon and electron microscopy, bioinformatics ). Students will be required to participate to scientific seminars, journal clubs, lecture and graduate courses, scientific workshops and congresses, and short courses for complementary training (e.g., safety, IPR protection, financial modelling and resource planning, legal basic knowledge, language skills, written skills for preparation of grants and papers). Each student will establish, together his/her personal supervisor, a personal Career Development Plan,comprising his/her training needs, scientific objectives, and reports on performance.

Students will be enrolled to PhD programmes at the local universities. At the end of the EIMID EST PhD programme, students will receive an informal European PhD from EIMID and a formal PhD from the associated university.

Eligible candidates

Candidates should apply by sending the following documents: 1. a letter stating their scientific interests; 2. the names, with addresses and numbers, of at least two (2) reference persons (e.g., former supervisors); 3. Curriculum Vitae and list of publications; 3. copy of the certificate of doctoral degree in scientific/medical disciplines (candidates who received their degree after 2001 will be preferred); 4. email address for communications and reply.

Candidates from new European Member and Associated States and from Third World countries are encouraged to apply. Candidates from non-European countries are eligible. Participation of women trainees will be privileged.

Following the rules of the Marie Curie Training and Mobility programme, nationals/residents (over 12 months) of a given country are not eligible for receiving their training in an institution of the same country.

Fellowships

A selected group of candidates will be interviewed and asked to give a presentation to the EIMID scientists. Successful candidates are expected to start their training programme in the host institution by January 1 st, 2006. Fellowships are in the competitive range of salary and will include a basic amount (variable depending on the hosting country) and a series of allowances (also variable; these are for mobility, travel, spouse, career development, etc.).

Applications

Complete applications must be sent by registered mail by October 18, 2005 and addressed to:
