  Oliver Billker Profile

Research Focus:

Oliver Billker has 9 years of research experience with malaria parasites of humans, rodents and birds. He has made important contributions to the cell biology of malarial transmission stages and parasite vector interaction, including the identification of the mosquito molecule that initiates parasite differentiation in the vector. As an EMBO Fellow he has gathered additional experience in molecular signal transduction research in bacterial models of pathogen-host interactions. He has recently been awarded a prestigious Career Development Award by the MRC to start his own research group. Current studies focus on the induction of gametogenesis as a paradigm for signal transduction in the parasite. They combine the innovative use of transgenic parasites with bioinformatics and proteomics techniques to identify key regulatory pathways of parasite differentiation in P. berghei. These techniques will be made available to the network and will be particularly useful to study phospholipid signalling in the parasite (cluster 2).
