Michael Blackman Profile |
 |
Research Focus: |
The central interest of the Blackman laboratory is red cell invasion by the malaria merozoite, and in particular the protein-protein interactions and proteolytic processing events which take place at the parasite surface during red cell entry. Work emanating from this group on the proteolytic modification of two important merozoite surface proteins and vaccine candidates, MSP-1 and AMA-1, has directly resulted in these processes being the best described of all the molecular events which take place during the course of erythrocyte invasion by the malaria merozoite. Over the last five years we have also identified and begun to characterize a new class of merozoite subtilisin-like serine proteases which may play a role in invasion. The group has particular expertise and strengths in the areas of protein biochemistry, culture and manipulation of blood-stage P. falciparum, and recombinant expression of correctly folded malarial proteins.
