Research Focus: |
We are interested in applying advanced microscopy techniques and quantitative image analysis to the study of Malaria parasites. So far, we mainly focus on the sporozoites of Plasmodium berghei, a widely used mouse malaria parasite. Sporozoites are injected by the mosquito into the skin of the host and have to travel from there to the liver. To achieve this journey, the sporozoites are actively moving using an actin-myosin based motor. Our main aim is to understand the cellular and biophysical processes during sporozoite movement. Our work relies heavily on collaborations with physics labs in Heidelberg for various light microscopy techniques and the Max Planck Institute in Martinsried for cryo-electron tomography studies of the parasite.
