  Jürg Gysin Profile

Research Focus:

He has been engaged in biology of malaria parasites for more than 20 years. One of the main objectives in the last seven years has been the study of P. falciparum surface antigens involved in cytoadhesion, host receptors post regulation and the modifications of the microvessel environment by the parasite. The group has made important contributions in the analysis of host receptors and parasite surface antigens by identifying the CSA receptor and participated in the identification of the DBL-3 g domain of the var CSA gene. In addition, a novel type of erythrocyte adhesion molecule RSP2 has been identified and analyzed. He’s also contributed to the field of malarial pathology by determining pathogenic mechanisms involving host cells, notably platelets and monocytes. He has also developed a large number of unique tools like panreactive monoclonal antibodies directed against DBL-3 CSA and RSP-2 and techniques to investigate parasite adhesion, under static, flow based and organotypic conditions, that can strengthen other partner activities to succeed in the achievement of defined goals in cluster 3.
