  Adrian Hill Profile

Research Focus:

Adrian Hill’s group in Oxford studies both the human genetics and cellular immunology of malaria and has made contributions in each area. Over the last three years they have assessed a variety of vaccines developed in their laboratories in trials in The UK and Africa. Central to these evaluations has been the use of a sporozoite challenge model whereby volunteers (including both vaccines and controls) are administered P. falciparum by infectious mosquito bites. To date over 100 individuals have been challenged in collaboration with Sinden’s group at Imperial College. To our knowledge these are the only vaccination and challenge studies that have been performed for malaria outside of the USA. This model provides a rare opportunity to characterise in detail early immunological events after challenge in response to the parasite infection.
