  Muntaser Ibrahim Profile

Research Focus:

Sudan has two features of particular interest for this project: a wide range of malaria transmission intensities, and a broad variety of ethnic groups, with emerging evidence of variation in their susceptibility to malaria. Over the past decade, M. Ibrahim has had a major interest in the immunoepidemiology of malaria in a low transmission setting, and he’s now expanding this to include epidemiological studies in a region of higher malaria endemicity. These field studies are backed up by excellent laboratory facilities for cellular immunology, molecular biology and human genetics (including automated DNA sequencing). A specific focus of this proposal is to define ethnic differences in susceptibility to malaria, both at the immunological and genetic level, and to establish the epidemiological infrastructure to dissect the molecular basis of these differences by genomic association analysis.
