Fotis Kafatos Profile |
 |
Research Focus: |
During the last 10 years, the Kafatos laboratory has pioneered fundamental molecular studies on Anopheles and today is on the forefront of mosquito molecular biology research. The laboratory is focused on malaria-mosquito interactions and questions of basic insect immunity. A number of immune markers have been isolated and have been used to detect and characterise mutiple temporally and tissue-specific immune responses to parasite invasion. Using functional genomic approaches, over 240 genes have now been identified in the Anopheles genome likely to be part of the innate immune system. Several crucial Anopheles tools such as EST libraries, DNA-microarrays, reverse genetics using RNAi, and germ-line transformation have been established in the Kafatos laboratory, and will be of use in other partner activities in clusters 1 and 4.
