Fred Kironde Profile |
 |
Research Focus: |
Fred Kironde’s group has been involved in research on malaria for the past 15 years. The Group is involved in molecular biology research and training in malaria, bilharzia and other tropical infections. F. Kironde is main supervisor to two PhD, three MS and several undergraduate trainees. In addition to development of malarial parasite and Bilharzia parasite vaccine candidates, the Group is engaged in work aimed at assessing the existing levels of malarial parasite drug resistance in Uganda and establishing molecular approaches for monitoring the spread of this resistance in Africa. Recently, Kironde and colleagues participated in exciting work on parasite cytoadherence to human blood-vessel walls. Before returning to Uganda, three years ago, Dr Kironde worked at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization/ International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB-UNIDO), India where he helped start the Malaria Research Department. Kironde’s group identified and described Plasmodium falciparum cross-species conserved antigens pf70, RNA helicase and a zinc-finger like molecule. Previously, he has supervised and trained six postdoctoral fellows, one MD, three PhD and 2 MSc students. Dr Kironde has published over 30 reviewed papers and abstracts He is a member of the Ethics Institutional Review Board (IRB) of Faculty of Medicine, Makerere University.
