  Dominic Kwiatkowski Profile

Research Focus:

Dominic Kwiatowski's group uses genomic epidemiology to explore the molecular basis of immunity and pathogenesis in human malaria. Working in close collaboration with the MRC Laboratories in The Gambia and Wellcome Trust units in Malawi and Kenya, they have established a major archive of DNA with clinical data from children with severe malaria together with parents as well as population controls. They collaborate with community-based studies in Mali, Tanzania and Burkina Faso on factors that determine malaria infection intensity. By high-density linkage disequilibrium mapping of genomic clusters of immunological candidate genes, the group aims to identify functional disease-modifying polymorphisms and to determine optimal strategies for linkage disequilibrium mapping of novel susceptibility loci elsewhere in the genome.
