  Elena Levashina Profile

Research Focus:

The group of Elena Levashina has been recently established at the IBMC (UPR 9022). The main focus of this group is the study of the molecular mechanisms of vector competence/refractoriness in the human malaria vector Anopheles gambiae. The group further develops the line of research, which E.Levashina initiated as a Staff Scientist in the laboratory of Prof. Kafatos at the EMBL. She and her group have developed the RNAi technology for mosquitoes and have successfully applied it in vitro and in adults. A central question of the group relates to the mechanisms of refractoriness dependent on the function of a complement-like protein, TEP1. This work will be accomplished in collaboration with S. Blandin (EMBL). This project will benefit from collaboration across clusters, namely with Prof. R. Sinden (IC, cluster 2) on interaction with P. falciparum, and Prof. A. Waters (LUMC, cluster 1) on identification of parasite surface proteins that interact with TEP1
