Over the last twelve years the KEMRI-Oxford-Wellcome collaborative group in Kilifi have established the clinical, demographic and laboratory infrastructure for carrying out studies on mechanisms of pathogenesis and immune protection in malaria. Particular strengths are the ability to carry out detailed clinical characterisation in studies of pathogenesis and the ability to undertake long term prospective studies of immune response. Kevin Marsh’s group has a particular focus on the role of the surface of the malaria infected red cell in pathogenesis and an as the target of protective immure responses.
