  David Modiano Profile

Research Focus:

The team of David Modiano during the last ten years has been studying the genetic epidemiology of susceptibility/resistance to Plasmodium falciparum malaria and the pathogenesis and clinical features of severe malaria. These studies, based on complementary epidemiological, clinical and genetical expertises and lab-field facilities have been performed in the frame of a traditional collaboration between the Institute of Parasitology of the University of Rome and the Centre National de Formation et Recherche sur le Paludisme of Burkina Faso. Comparative surveys on the susceptibility to malaria among sympatric West African ethnic groups and intraethnic case-control studies on severe malaria led to the description of genetic based differences in the capacity to mount immune responses to malaria and demonstrated the role of haemoglobin C in the susceptibility to the disease.
