Pietro Alano Profile |
 |
Research Focus: |
The team of Pietro Alano at ISS has been studying P.falciparum blood stage differentiation, gametocytogenesis and parasite gene regulation for more than ten years. Sexual stage specific genes have been isolated and used for studying the parasite commitment to differentiation and the cell biology of gametocyte formation. Gametocyteless derivative clones from reference clone 3D7 are used to study loss of gametocyte production. In the past three years activity focussed on analysis of gene regulatory sequences and parasite genome wide expression studies. Flanking regions of gametocyte-specific genes are studied in transient transfection experiments. Microarray expression analysis of parasites undergoing sexual differentiation is performed in collaboration with Drs. Z.Bozdech and J.DeRisi at UCSF, USA, and microarray hybridisation and analysis has been established at ISS. These activities are linked to those of the ISS team of computational biology, engaged in applying original algorithms to the analyis of non-coding sequences of malaria genomes. These expertises will complement partner activities in Cluster 1.
