  Marta Ponzi Profile

Research Focus:

The group of Marta Ponzi has been studying parasite genome organisation, structure and dynamics of telomeric and subtelomeric regions for more than ten years. More recent work was focused on the study of a subtelomeric gene family (sep), identified in P. berghei but conserved within the genus, encoding integral membrane proteins exported beyond parasite compartment. In addition, an original tool was developed, which allow transfection mediated chromosome fragmentation for functional studies of subtelomeric genes. Comparative genome analysis led to the identification of genomic loci conserved in their structural organisation and gene composition between different Plasmodium spp. The encoded genes are regulated during parasite sexual differentiation. Functional studies of their regulatory sequences allowed the generation of transgenic parasites expressing GFP under a male-specific promoter, a unique tool for the analysis of sex-specific proteome. These expertises will complement partner activities in Cluster 1 and 2.
