Artur Scherf Profile |
 |
Research Focus: |
He has been engaged in studies on the molecular biology of malaria parasites for more than 10 years. One of the main objectives in the last five years has been the analysis of virulence factor genes of P. falciparum involved in adhesion and antigenic variation. The group has made major contributions in the analysis of antigenic variation demonstrating the importance of epigenetic factors in var gene regulation and repertoire diversity. In addition, a novel type of erythrocyte adhesion molecule has been identified and analysed. A large number of unique tools (antibodies to nuclear compartments and chromatin silencing factors) and techniques to investigate parasite adhesion and epigenetic gene regulation (dynamics of nuclear architecture by FISH and chromatin precipitation) will complement and strengthen other partner activities to achieve the ambitious goals defined in clusters 1+ 3.
