Alan Thomas Profile |
 |
Research Focus: |
His department is engaged in analyses of the interactions between host and infectious organisms. This takes the form of studies at the host/parasite interface as well as research designed to identify and develop new drugs and vaccines. He uses P. berghei and P. falciparum transfection systems, and has also pioneered the use of the primate malaria, P. knowlesi into a readily accessible and rapid transfection system He’s interested to use these systems to define critical metabolic pathways that may be targeted by new drug families, and to define critical elements of surface accessible molecules that may comprise vaccine components. He has a vaccine based on AMA-1 that is scheduled to begin clinical trials in 2003, and a research programme aimed at understanding the role of AMA- 1 in parasite biology.
